Dynamic Control System (DCS Automatic)
 
DCS is developed and introduced by Wageningen UR, Food & Biobased Research (FBR) , in the Netherlands since 1997.
FBR applied the DCS standard on more than 200 ULO-storagerooms and have gained with the system more than 15 years of research and practice-results. The DCS standard analyze a sample of apples on the presence of ethanol by carrieing out a pulp analysis. When no ethanol is measured, the oxygen level in the storageroom can be decreased, in case of ethanol presence the oxygen level needs to be increased : dynamic storage.
 
Since the introduction of DCS by FBR Wageningen alternative systems are introduced and labeled as DCA (Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere). Worldwide the positive results of DCA has been confirmed and proved by postharvest-researchers.
 
Due to the labour-intensive method of the DCS standard , the use of this analysis is very limited, despite the enormous advantages. In practice this means that the best oxygen level is not reached as required to get the most optimal storage-condition. In 2009 FBR started to cooperate with  EMS and Storex to improve the DCS in order to make the system less labour-intensive by measuring the ethanol in the head-space but still keeping the system reliable and affordable. It took 6 years of trail and error to develop the DCS Automatic as it is today, a non-destructive analysis to measure the ethanol in the fruitflesh with high-tech sensors and equipment.
 
Storex offers two models to measure ethanol directly, namely : DCS Automatic and Ethanol TESTER.
